Country Western Songs I Chose for My Own Father's Service

My father did not really care for funerals and wasn't very interested in discussing his own. When he passed on, however, I knew exactly the kind of music to play at the Celebration of Life memorial we had for him; good old-time country western music. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Tom T. Hall - some of the best of the best.

I downloaded the following songs, made a CD, and the songs were played in this order as the prelude to the church part of the service. These are songs I picked out to be specific to my dad and the kind of man he was. He loved these songs, these singers, and the lyrics are sweet, touching, and even a little amusing (the ones by Tom T. Hall are cute and funny).

When I miss my dad, I sometimes listen to the CD of the prelude. It warms my heart.

Each of these songs have personal meaning for my father, my family, or myself. When choosing songs to remember and honor someone, I believe there are no hard and fast rules. I looked for songs that were special to us. I think it is important for the music to reflect the individuals involved.

I'm glad you included the Green Day song. They thought it was a dumb song that they threw onto their album for the heck of it, and it turned out to be a huge hit.
